Cocktail table sizing does not get much airtime in the event planning world, which is why some people turn up to pick up their hire tables and are surprised by how tall they actually are.
Here is everything you need to know about cocktail table dimensions before you book.
A standard cocktail table is:
This is the format that most hire companies in Sydney use. It is the height designed for standing adults to rest drinks, plates, and elbows at a comfortable level without stooping or raising their arms awkwardly.
For reference: a standard dining table is around 75 centimetres high. A cocktail table is significantly taller.
The height of a cocktail table is the reason you cannot just pull a regular chair up next to one. A standard dining chair has a seat height of about 45 to 48 centimetres. At a 1.1 metre table, that puts the guest’s eye level well below the table surface. Uncomfortable and impractical.
Bar stools and cocktail chairs are designed for this height. Their seat height is typically 65 to 78 centimetres, which puts a seated guest in a natural, upright position at a cocktail table.
When you hire from us, the bar stools and cocktail chairs are matched to our table height. You do not need to check compatibility — it is handled.
A 60 to 70 centimetre diameter table top fits:
In practice, cocktail tables are not designed for everyone to sit at once. They are gathering points.
The table itself takes up roughly 0.7 to 0.8 square metres of floor space. A table with guests standing around it takes approximately 2.5 to 3 square metres — the table, the guests, and enough space for people to walk past behind them.
Even spacing is better than symmetry. Tables pushed into mathematically equal grid positions can feel stiff. Slight offsets create a more natural social layout.
Keep tables away from walls. Tables pushed flat against perimeter walls invite guests to line up along the edges, which does not create the mingling dynamic you are after.
Floor surface: On uneven outdoor surfaces (grass, pavers, gravel), check that each table sits level before guests arrive.
